6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic trend: Baby Boomers Aren’t Retiring

-Source- https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666

- I believe an opportunity exists as the information in the article is factually proven. Baby boomers are working later and later in their lives and this is due to the Great Recession of 2008. This recession altered the lives of many baby boomers as it forced them to push back their retirement much longer than originally planned.

- From this trend, I believe the prototypical customer has to be the younger generations of workers. With this revelation that baby boomers are still big-time players in the job market, it takes a way jobs from younger individuals. As a response, I feel younger workers need to possibly find a new career path. There’s no point in having a plan to have a certain position if that position is already taken by one of baby boomers’ generation. They made it clear they aren’t retiring anytime soon which definitely effects the younger generations attitude and goals. I believe this opportunity will allow younger generation to seek other ideas and for them to possibly carve their own mark in the world.

- I think I saw this opportunity because a lot of my family comes from the baby boomer generation and they still haven’t retired yet.

Economic Trend: The Economy Is in the Expansion Phase

-Source- https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666

-I believe an opportunity exists as the article backs up its claims with factual information about past recessions and past governmental shutdowns/crisis’.  The article claims were in the expansion phase (where everything is running smoothly) with the peak phase coming in the next couple of years.

- I believe the prototypical customer is any citizen in America who is looking for a job. The economy is flowing, and the time is now. Get a job and save some money. The business cycle fluctuates every few decades, but this is the prime opportunity to get a job as everyone in hiring these days.

- I think I saw this opportunity as I recently obtained a job with relative ease after a week or so of searching. Opportunities are out there; citizens just have to find them.

Regulatory change: H.R. 2527: Vaccinate All Children Act of 2019

-Source: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/116/hr2527

- I believe this opportunity exists even though it hasn’t been passed and its in the first stage of the legislative process. This act has been put in place to potentially amend the Public Health Service Act.

-The prototypical customers here would be all children enrolling in elementary and secondary schools. I ultimately think this act can reduce the amount of diseases spread within children.

- I saw this opportunity as last year I never got my flu shot and ended up paying for it. I got the flu and it was terrible. If all kids got their shots/vaccinated before school starts, I believe this would significantly help in stopping the transmission of diseases to others.

Regulatory change: S. 21: Pay Our Coast Guard Act

-I believe this opportunity exists even though the it doesn’t have a high chance at being passed. The act brings up points that I support and favor.

-the prototypical customer would be the coast guard. Additional funds would allow the Coast Guard to continue to “pay and allowances for members of the Coast Guard, civilian employees, and contractors; the payment of a death gratuity, funeral travel etc.

-I saw this as an opportunity as I have family who have been in the Coast Guard, so this Act really hit home for me.

  1. Hi Connor,
I also wrote about the fact that Baby Boomers are not retiring, drawing from the same article that you did in The Balance. It is an interesting take that the prototypical customer is younger generations, not the Baby Boomers themselves. Ask yourself how this can be marketed. You suggest new generations find new job paths. Could this be monetized as a job agency? These are the questions to ask while developing your opportunities for the rest of the semester.

The articles you picked for the economic and regulatory trends fit each topic well. The article regarding a potential regulation to vaccinate all children is rather interesting to me. One of my articles I posted of a local opportunity involved a couple who stopped providing chemotherapy to their child with cancer and subsequently they were arrested and charged with neglect. The judge ordered the child to resume treatment. There are multiple issues involved with each of these cases. The first being where the government oversteps and takes too much parental control away from the parents. I can see how those who choose to not vaccinate put others at risk as compared to the chemotherapy of the one little boy which does not harm others. There might be alternative solutions besides passing laws where the government dictates medical and parental authority.
